Henri de Navarre, the future Henri IV was a youthful companion of Geoffroy de Caumont. On 25 October 1587, Henri de Navarre won the battle of Coutras. With 22 captured enemy flags in hand, he ran to the Gourdourville castle to lay them at his mistress’s feet. Unfortunately,
Diane d’Arbois, Countess of Gramont and Guiche, a.k.a “La Belle Corisande”, had left the castle the day before. Henry stayed in the castle «in great disarray in love» according to the chronicler of the time. The 22 flags
were solemnly kept in the guards’ room.
